Whether your cat is jumping and rolling all around, licking the toy, or just being really hyper, there's no doubt that with some quality catnip your cat will be having the time of their life.
So what is it exactly that causes these strong reactions from catnip? It all boils down to a chemical called "Nepetalactone." Around 75% of cats are affected when it interacts with special receptors in the olfactory system (sense of smell).
It's believed that this reaction may mimic the effects of specific pheromones, although research is still ongoing. Catnip has also been shown to have mild effects on humans, which has led some to brew it into teas for various remedies.
After enjoying the catnip for 5 to 15 minutes, your cat will then have to wait for an hour or two to experience the effects again. Kittens under the age of 3 months generally do not react to catnip.
A common question that we get asked is whether or not catnip is harmful to cats, and the answer is a definite "no"! Catnip is non-toxic to your cat, although just as many things in excess can turn bad, vomiting may occur if large amounts are eaten.
When buying catnip, the quality can vary drastically. A lot of storebought catnip can be old with the effects greatly weakened. That's exactly why we started growing our own, and after trying out various strains and methods, the result was some extremely fresh & potent catnip. After rave reviews locally and from our family's cats, it's now available to you and your cats on this website!
